The PQ Index responds to Iron and Nickel (ferrous debris only). This technique does not make absolute measurements - it monitors trends.

Results from the PQ should be evaluated in relation to the Iron and Nickel concentrations. If the PQ Index and Iron concentrations are similar, or the PQ Index is higher than the Iron, there are most likely large ferrous particles present.

Note that large concentrations of Aluminium and/or Copper (especially in large pieces) can noticibly reduce the PQ Index due to the Lenz effect.
